We’re celebrating a major milestone with the launch of its offshore construction campaign, bringing the UK’s first carbon dioxide transportation and storage network a step closer to reality.
The arrival of the first linepipe joints at the Port of Hartlepool marks the start of construction of a 149km offshore pipeline that will transport captured carbon emissions from industries across Teesside for permanent storage beneath the North Sea.
Delivered in partnership with Saipem and PD Ports, the project is already delivering benefits across the Tees Valley region. More than 60 percent of the pipe sections have been manufactured in Hartlepool, supporting around 150 skilled jobs and creating 35 additional roles, including apprenticeships.
As the backbone of the East Coast Cluster, NEP will help decarbonise UK industry while driving investment, supporting local businesses and creating jobs. Together with Net Zero Teesside Power, the project is expected to support around 3,000 jobs and has already awarded more than £2 billion of contracts to UK companies.
Once operational, the NEP network could be capable of transporting and storing up to 23 million tonnes of CO₂ each year, making it a vital piece of infrastructure in the UK’s journey to net zero.
