Northern Endurance Partnership Welcomes Liberty Steel UK’s Contribution to Transformational CCUS Project

The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) has today welcomed the news that Liberty Steel, based in Hartlepool, has started work on creating pipelines for the onshore and offshore infrastructure needed to transport CO2 from carbon capture projects across Teesside to secure storage under the North Sea.

The work, which will continue into the third quarter of 2025, has helped Liberty secure 30 new jobs.

Liberty Steel, in partnership with Marubeni-Itochu Tubulars Europe Plc, Corinth Pipeworks and Eisenbau Kramer GmbH, are the selected contractors to provide the Linepipe for both the Onshore and Offshore elements of the NEP – one of eight engineering, procurement and construction packages awarded by NEP/NZT Power with a combined value of around £4bn.

Liberty Steel UK, as a major local employer, is playing a vital role in delivering the Northern Endurance Partnership. Their expertise is essential to building the infrastructure that will transport captured CO2 for safe and permanent storage, enabling us to decarbonise industry and create a cleaner future for the region.

The contract with Liberty Steel UK demonstrates NEP’s commitment to supporting local businesses and creating opportunities for the Teesside community.

The NEP infrastructure will initially serve the Teesside-based East Coast Cluster carbon capture projects – NZT Power, H2Teesside and Teesside Hydrogen CO2 Capture – that were selected for first connection to NEP by DESNZ in March 2023 as part of the UK’s cluster sequencing process for carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS).
