Local MPs visit East Coast Cluster to see reindustrialisation ambition becoming reality on Teesside

28 May 2026, Teesside – Local Members of Parliament today visited the Teesworks site for a firsthand look at the progress being made on two of the UK’s most significant low-carbon energy infrastructure projects: NZT Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP).

The visit started at the Wilton Centre and brought together Andy McDonald MP, Luke Myer MP, and representatives from the offices of Anna Turley MP and Chris McDonald MP, alongside project teams from NZT Power, NEP, Technip Energies, Balfour Beatty and bp. Following briefings from each project partner – which included an animation showcasing how NZT Power and NEP will look post construction – MPs engaged with members of the local workforce while taking a tour of the combined project footprint at Teesworks.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment for both projects, with construction activity accelerating following the arrival of the first major equipment delivery for NZT Power to Redcar Bulk Terminal in April 2026, which was upgraded to support major construction projects of this kind.

NZT Power is the first East Coast Cluster (ECC) carbon capture project to enter construction and is set to become the world’s first major gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage. NEP is building the carbon capture and storage infrastructure that will service NZT Power and the rest of the ECC. Their work will establish a new industry, whilst preserving existing sectors and protecting jobs across Teesside, the Humber, and a UK-wide supply chain.

Together, the projects have awarded over 230 individual subcontracts to UK businesses, with a combined value of over £1.5bn and are on track to deliver more than 50% UK content across the build, while creating and supporting more than 3,000 jobs during the construction phase.

The visit highlighted the tangible difference the projects are making to people and communities across Teesside. MPs had the opportunity to speak with apprentices and members of the local workforce who have returned to the region to work on the projects, part of a wider effort to create lasting skills and employment opportunities for local people.

The projects are supporting apprenticeships, graduate pathways and early-career opportunities as construction activity ramps up.

Additionally, the visit came as Balfour Beatty, the construction partner on NZT Power and NEP, is launching a new local recruitment campaign in Teesside which aims to highlight opportunities to local people who are looking for employment as mechanical engineers, site engineers and temporary works coordinators. Other roles will become available as project construction progresses. By using targeted display advertising, recruitment videos and printed advertisements in local media publications, the campaign is working to draw in a diverse range of quality applications from the local area.
